Fiction Friday. Story Title – Reach for Faith.

Mum! Let go of me! I’ve had enough of these your religious talks, and of you constantly pestering me on how to live my life. I’m not your little child anymore, just let me be!

At this point, mum’s eyes were already sore from crying. Sam saw her tears, and it hurt her heart. She wanted to just run to her mum, hug her and say that everything would be just fine.

However, she had gone past that stage and nothing was going to be fine anymore. Nothing her mum told her at this point could counter all that she knew for herself now. All the lies she was told as she grew up were enough and she wasn’t buying into the Christian thing anymore.

Sam, this isn’t how we raised you…‘ Mum broke the silence but her voice was still shaky from crying.

Mum you raised me on the foundation of lies my whole life. First, you adopted and made me live my whole life trying to please a non-existent God… You can’t control me with your religion anymore. ‘

Sam didn’t like the sobs coming from mum. She had to be away from her before it got to her.

I’m really not in the best state now mum. I won’t be back home tonight, don’t wait for me… Bye! ‘

Before Mum could say another word, Sam was out through the door. The car engine came on, and as mum heard the sound of her driving out, it felt like her whole life was slipping through her hands.

Sam! ‘ Mum gasped and those were the last words she could remember.

Madam, wake up madam! Na how many things you inhale wey you just dey scatter sleep anyhow for this place? Abeg wake up, make person plan hin next move’.

The voice mum heard was very strange as she tried to reconcile the event that occurred between herself and Sam with whatever was happening now. She opened her eyes and before her were two men with fierce eyes. The look they had sent chills down her spines as she struggled to speak. The men drew closer to her and took the tape off her mouth.

Mum didn’t think twice before she started screaming. At least someone had to hear her voice and know she was in trouble before she lashed out at the two men in front of her. The men were taken aback by her screaming and hurriedly put the tape on her mouth again.

The man speaking had sores on his lips and as much as mum wanted to jump on him and scratch his being, she was full of compassion towards them. She wondered how people spent their lives living in sin and misery in the world where there wasn’t any satisfaction, and would still end up in a place as bad as hell. It didn’t seem the best choice but it was what it was. The room became hotter and mum’s eyes were shaky, she wanted to speak but she couldn’t till she passed out.

Shey you don call the husband? Because if Oga reach this place find out say nothing don move e no go good o.

Sam saw how perplexed Dad looked after he got the news of where mum was. It had been four days since she last saw mum and she felt so guilty for leaving home that way after their misunderstanding. If she had been there all this could have been avoided.

Dad… Did they say if mum is fine and why are they keeping her hostage? ‘

Oh, Sam! I don’t know how your mum is doing right now. They wouldn’t tell. I doubt if she hasn’t got another asthma attack now. ‘ Dad paced around the room. He wasn’t quite sure everything was really happening.

Dad wasn’t saying everything yet and Sam was getting impatient.

Dad! Why do they have mum? What’s this all about? We can’t just sit here and do nothing… What if they kill her?

The words were out of Sam’s mouth faster than she could think and she drew closer to where Dad sat. Hugging him and putting her head on his shoulder.

 ‘I’m sorry ‘.

Dad returned her hug and began to tell her everything, from his former job to the fraud, and how he had been a Mordecai, reporting those plotting evil in the office.

The room fell silent for a few seconds after Dad was done speaking. Sam needed time to settle it all in.

So you mean your former colleague from work is back? And he wants a ransom two times the amount he lost after you told on him before we’ll see mum again? This isn’t happening! ‘ Sam got up and paced the room and by this time the feeling she had wasn’t despair. It was anger.

Dad saw the change in her countenance and said ‘ Sam, all we must do is pray hard and fast. Humanly, there’s not much I can do, I’ll put a call across to my friends and we’ll discuss if I should get the police involved or not. However, we must pray.

Dad moved over to where Sam was and gave her a peck on her forehead before he left for his room.

Sam sat up on her bed. It had been a week since mum had been kidnapped and she felt very scared. Just last night those who took her had called and the feedbacks they gave were very worrisome. They had found out about mum’s asthma and were able to help her before she had any major attacks. However, asides from that it wasn’t comfortable that mum was in the midst of people who didn’t care about her in any way. She hadn’t been allowed to speak with mum and she wasn’t so sure if mum was fine.

As she paced around the room she remembered her Dad’s words ‘ Pray Sam, pray hard and fast.

How was she supposed to pray to a God she didn’t believe in any longer. She was raised to see Him as a kind Father but He had been everything but that. Mum spent her whole life serving Him and now she was in the worse place anyone could imagine.

How about her, she had been abandoned as a child and she was supposed to believe in a God of love? Nothing made sense.

Sam felt somewhere in her heart that she wasn’t being fair to God but she couldn’t bring herself to accept that. The day was fast becoming dark and soon it would be the second week since mum had been kidnapped. She walked close to the windows and looked out. Before she could control it she felt tears trickling down her cheeks and her mouth moving.

God, I don’t know if I should believe in you but right now there’s no l option in any place else. So, I’m giving you a chance to be my last resort. Not for me but mum. All my life I have been unfaithful to you, but not mum. She’s lived all her life believing and being faithful to you and doesn’t deserve this. Please help and rescue her. If you’re really a God of love, do this for her and I promise to give knowing you a try. Thank you!

She felt relief of some sort after the words were out. She was back on her bed this time, remembering the amazing moments she had growing up with mum. There was a mixture of smiles and tears on her face till she fell asleep.

Mum woke up very hopeful this morning. It was three weeks already and contrary to what it ordinarily should have been, she didn’t feel like a captive in this place. The men there became really cautious with her three days after the kidnap. At first, they had pulled her, shouted at her, and got really angry when they had to get an inhaler for her asthma but when they realized she wasn’t grumpy and didn’t fight them anymore, they began to warm up to her. She knew God alone made them treat her with such caution and favour just like He made happen with Daniel in the Lion’s den. For the first time two nights ago, they finally sat down to hear her out as she preached the gospel to them.

The bigger guy among them had cried so much like a baby when she spoke which greatly surprised her. All they did was listen and warm up to her like God had prepared their hearts in advance for the words. With everything that had happened mum was only full of joy at how it all worked out for good.

Tomorrow was the big day, they had it all planned. First, the men had thought to let her go and lie to their boss that she escaped but mum knew that wouldn’t end the cycle of sin and vengeance. So, the men called the police and reported everything that had happened that afternoon, leaving no one out of it, themselves inclusive. The police thought it was a fraud at first because it seemed all too good to be true but they were convinced eventually. The boss had also been reported and it was her last day with the men who would be at the police station to surrender themselves early the next day.

As mum stood up and gave a loud sigh, the men gave her a weak smile in return. Like God’s word promised, everything would work for their good because they loved him.

Hello Sam! ‘ Sam realized that wasn’t Dad’s voice alone and she rushed to open her room’s door. Before her very eyes was mum, mum in one piece!

Their hug lasted for so long, that Dad had to pull Sam away from mum and hold on to her. Sam still couldn’t believe it was mum and that was why she held on so tight before mum would be out of her sight again.

Mum… You’re fine. I’m… I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. I never should have gone that way and I left the gate open, I wasn’t the same… ‘

Mum interrupted before Sam could finish her sentence.

It’s fine darling. Really, everything is absolutely fine and God saved me. ‘

Yeah… He did. ‘ Sam replied, remembering she had unfinished business with God. He had saved her mum and kept to His part of the deal. Sam hugged mum again, this time allowing herself to cry as much as she could.

The beautiful union continued with an amazing dinner as mum mentioned every detail she could remember about the kidnap. Dad and Sam listened so earnestly as their reactions changed each minute from worry to a smile or laughter or a deep sign. Everyone was so content with each other, Sam knew in her heart that it was God’s work and felt a tinge of guilt that left almost as quickly as it came. God had proved Himself faithful by saving mum and helping her faith again, and that was what mattered now, not her guilt.

The End.

Author’s Note:- It’s interesting how different things bring people closer to God. It’s like God meets us in our peculiarities, preaching the same message of salvation to each one of us in peculiar ways. Like Sam, many young people, teenagers especially want to understand why there’s so much emphasis on God everywhere. It seems like everywhere they turn people are talking and yet they can’t seem to find why it’s so important. The biggest gift a searching soul can receive is knowing that God already reached out to them. The time when someone struggles with faith is the best time to remind them that God is also interested in meeting them one on one, and they’ll see him if only they reach out. He isn’t the God of the perfect, but the God of the universe. Also, if you are struggling with your faith right now, get personal and see God reach you where you are at.
