The Spirit of Christmas.

Hello Fam, Merry Christmas🥂🤭 It’s boxing day today and I decided to make this blog post my gift to you this Christmas. I hope you are blessed by it❤️

It was Christmas day yesterday, and, one thing that’s exceptional for me during Christmas every year, is that the Christmas feeling never gets old. This is largely based on the fact that I see newness in the reason for the season every time and it makes me get into the Christmas Spirit very easily.

Growing up, the reasons for the season were a lot. There were new dresses, new shoes, new glasses (anyone?😎), a Christmas/End of year party, and the very fun side of eating without restrictions (When I was younger I ate without considering what succeeded after overeating 🤣). I took Christmas as my second birthday and looked forward to it every year.

One other reason which made the season of Christmas one that excited me yearly was the promise I made to myself at the end of every Christmas day. It goes thus: “I will be the one to kill the chicken next year!” It’s been over two decades now and yes, even today I make that promise again 😌.

As I grow up, especially in the faith, Christmas keeps making a whole lot of sense and I have more reasons for joy and gladness than ever before. This joy and gladness mean a lot to me now because the dimensions of celebrating the season have changed over the course of the years.

I have grown from being the young girl staying up at night on “Christmas eve-eve” to see the pleasant things my parents bring home from the market to being bold enough to pluck off the feathers from the chicken and expertly divide the meat, to be a young girl deciding to host my Christmas all by myself in school, to going for outreaches on Christmas day, to spending Christmas at home because family always comes first, and now to a young lady who places all the possible outcomes and ways I can spend Christmas before God and asks Him “Lord, how do you want me to spend your birthday this year?” and I trust God to say just exactly what will be a perfect birthday gift to him.

It is so amazing that in all of these beautiful Christmas moments, none has ever felt more important than the other because the reason has always been at the center of the season. I know that many times we emphasize that Christmas isn’t about eating and drinking, truly it isn’t, but what we fail to emphasize is that Jesus doesn’t think eating and drinking is frivolous but he wants to be very much involved in everything we do.

And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

It’s amazing to know that in every detail of how we spend the season, we can and should represent Christ. The moment of sharing a meal with the family should be full of love and edifying conversations, reminding yourself of the love that saved you. The moment on the field should not be seen as you depriving yourself, but rather as you celebrating Jesus by reminding the lost in this world that there is salvation and redemption for them in Christ Jesus. The moment with your babe should be a reminder that Jesus is the perfect love example and you’ll spend eternity learning to live up to Him in your commitment to your partner.

In every detail of how we celebrate the season, we can bring up the conversation of how to be more Christlike because that is why he came, to make us more like him in all that we do. He didn’t come to suspend our eating and drinking but to teach us a more excellent way of following the rhythm of the father per time and season.

I believe that holidays help us to focus on things that we can and need to get better at as individuals. For instance, if Christmas made you have a meal with your mum which you have missed all year, then take it as a reminder that it doesn’t only have to be Christmas for you to have dinner with your mum. If it was an opportunity to preach the gospel, then it’s a reminder that there are things more important in life like the salvation of a soul and you should consider reaching out more often.

We don’t have to let the Christmas spirit end with Christmas, we should rather allow it to teach us that we can be consistent at doing the things that matter most and make our Christianity a living and not just a doing affair. When we integrate seeing every moment as one to live for Jesus, and not setting goals or waiting for titles to a season before we represent him then we are living as Christians, celebrating the Lord daily.

The reason for the season is Jesus and all that we have received as a result of his birth, death, burial, and resurrection. The Holy Spirit is part of the package and with him in us, we can let Christmas every year be spirit led by asking the question, Lord what would you have me do this time? Trust me the fun never gets old when you let God decide the details beyond tradition each year. This makes anticipating Christmas more fun each year, cos you never know what God would have you do, and with/to whom you’ll be sharing glad tidings of great joy.

I do hope you had a fun-filled celebration this year, and I look forward to reading your comments.

Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day. See you in 2023 (where I finally get to kill a chicken on Christmas day 😌).

Thank you for reading today’s blog. Xoxo ❤️❤️

Joy to the world ☺
